Artist's statement

I approach painting as an endeavor of the spirit. My ordinary surroundings are a starting point in a method that relies
on an instinctive response to subject and the act of painting. My feelings for the people, places and things of everyday life
provide the initial creative emotion that evolves as I explore the pleasures of painting. The evolution of the work is more important
than its completion because I do not yet know what the painting is going to become. I relish the investigation of the
formal aspects of painting, the visceral and tactile pleasure of manipulating paint and the personal signature that emerges from
the exploration of technique. I seek a delicate balance in maintaining the integrity of the original inspiration of nature and the new
impulses that surface during the playful action of painting. When this approach becomes truly unselfconscious it produces
surprising self-discoveries: hidden memories, delightful technical nuances and subliminal homage to other artists.
The completed painting is a synthesis of my reaction to subject and the serendipitous discoveries of the painting process.
The essence of this activity ultimately relies on the rhythms of my personality. The traits of these rhythms are the product of an
idiosyncratic blend of my instincts, emotions, experiences and inheritances.
